Further Information

In 1992, I was involved in a Youth Enterprise Program in Moscow with the Inter-Action charity, teaching business and computer skills to young people. I was one of a team of eight. We were trained to work co-operatively and train others. We then led teams of Russian young people through the enterprise program. It was an intensive but enjoyable and educational experience and it greatly improved my ability to communicate and co-operate with others to achieve specific objectives. It taught me new social, inter-personal, management and organisation skills.

Whilst I was at University, I worked part-time and during vacations as system and staff support person in a small highly computerised lawyers' office, Brent Community Law Centre (BCLC). The system is a Windows for Workgroups 3.11 and 95 peer network with twenty PCs, which also connect to a SCO UNIX server.

My duties were varied and included installing software updates, ensuring efficient operation of the network, data backup, anti-virus software and system maintenance. I installed a network fax and maintained ISDN links with a branch office. I also maintained data integrity in the office FoxPro-based client record database. I wrote various macro-driven Word form templates, including an electronic application form to the Industrial Tribunal and the High Court's Form 86A. I supported staff generally and in using, for example, mail merge. I also assisted the Centre's accountant to establish ODBC links between Sage and Excel.

I have installed hardware upgrades to the computers including adding RAM, modems, hard discs and CD-ROM drives. I set up and maintained the Centre's arrangements permitting staff to work remotely from home and from the branch offices not connected via the ISDN links. I also set up various new machines with Windows 95, including installing network and other cards. Following this, I set up the Centre's Internet connection.

I have been interested in computers since I was about six. I have a PC a home, which is networked to two others in the house, all of which run Windows 95 and are connected to the Internet. I use the Internet quite extensively for e-mail, browsing the World Wide Web and playing multi-user games.

In March 1997, I started working part-time at Inter-Action Social Enterprise Trust. The Inter-Action finance office handles both the educational charity and its connected venue hire company, which runs catered events, conferences and parties. It has a small staff and there are a number of volunteers. The Inter-Action group was failing - the accounts and returns for the two previous years had not been completed or audited and the network server had crashed, taking much of the financial data with it. This resulted in grants being paid up to 18 months late and the organisation not being in control of its finances.

I was mainly employed to re-establish a computerised accounts system. As staff, including various accountants, left my role expanded and I helped reconstitute the accounts ready for audit. Recently I have been concluding outstanding VAT and Inland Revenue Returns. Due to the small size of the remaining staff at Inter-Action, as well as my principle role in the finance office (including personnel and payroll), I was involved in answering enquiries, running the events, maintaining the 'premises', working with volunteers, and dealing with contractors, suppliers, banks, funders, Customs and Excise, the Inland Revenue and Companies House.

I was responsible for managing the workload of the finance office, unsupervised much of the time. There were many occasions when work had to be completed under intense pressure, and I often worked both at Inter-Action and for other employers at evenings, weekend and even some nights!

I have extensive experience of establishing and maintaining mailing list databases and organising mailings. I worked part-time and during vacations from Sussex University as system and staff support person at Brent Community Law Centre, and I have continued to do this since leaving university. I have been supporting the extensive use made of computers. Recently I have been particularly involved supporting the lawyers with costs and legal aid billing. I have extensive experience of maintaining and supporting PC networks and users on both Windows 3.1 and 95, and the Microsoft Office applications. I have also programmed with these applications to produce forms and software to monitor Legal Aid work.
